Research in brief
Peppermint Oil (Mentha piperita) (leaf) has a long history of traditional use for symptomatic treatment of dyspepsia, flatulence, and intestinal colic.

Peppermint oil ingested as a tea or oral supplement is often used to help calm gastrointestinal complaints by providing antispasmodic effects. It seems to reduce slow wave frequency in the small intestine, slowing peristaltic movement. The antispasmodic activity appears to result from direct relaxing effects on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract smooth muscle.

In 2007, Italian investigators reported that 75% of patients in their study who took peppermint oil capsules for four weeks had a major reduction in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms, compared with just 38% of those who took a placebo (Cappello et al., 2007).

Peppermint oil should be used with caution in individuals with acid reflux disease, anemia, gallstones or hiatus hernia. Hypersensitivity has been known to occur (rashes, heartburn)

Recommended purpose:
